I think the point of the presentation is that these simple, mundane forms seem really simple, but often turn out to be hard to do well. The web is full of examples- one of my favourites is Flickr pre Yahoo (super short) and post Yahoo. In our experience, site owners tend to leap at the opportunity to jam in every possible field about the user- "just in case". Nice, short sign up forms are (I believe) quite an art to get live.
